8 Common Toothbrushing Mistake People Make
Most people brush their teeth unconsciously. They have seen
it as normal routine and have even forgotten the importance. They get surprised
to see tartars building up in their teeth and even yellow teeth when they check
their mirror or even when they go for dental check- up. Brushing your teeth
rightly will save you from a lot of dental problems. Some people do not realize they
are making some mistake even while brushing. Today, I will be discussing some
common mistakes people make while brushing their teeth.
8 Common Tooth-Brushing Mistakes
1. Go for the right toothbrush
In choosing your tooth brush, you need to choose the right
tool. The size of your mouth and teeth
matters when choosing toothbrush. If you find it stressful to open your mouth
wide while brushing, it might actually be due to oversized brush for your
mouth. It should feel fit in the mouth and while holding.
Go for soft bristle toothbrush. Hard bristle may damage your
gum and even destroy your enamel leading to sensitive teeth.
You can use electric or manual depending on your choice. Although,
electric toothbrush do the job better especially in case of arthritis or
troubled hand, shoulder or arm.
2. Mistake in your brushing method
- Some people’s brushing method does not promote a healthy teeth and gum. Up and down motion is the best motion for brushing. Side to side motion can cause can scrape the gum and may cause bleeding gum while brushing. Always ensure you old your brush at 45 degree angle to your gum.
- Always ensure you brush your tongue to avoid bad breath. Also brush the hard to get area of the teeth like the back molar and inner tooth surface to avoid tartar build up in them.
- Avoid starting from the same place while brushing. A lot of people are used to particular steps in brushing. You are energized at the onset of brushing and you might get tired by the time you finish, starting and ending brushing in a particular place daily will result in some part that you always brush last been affected.
- Keep into notice the area you have brushed and not.
3. Duration and frequency of brushing
How frequent do you brush your teeth? Two times daily is recommended
for tooth brushing. Some dentists recommend three times daily.
I have seen people brushing like they are in a competition,
30 second they are done. Spend minimum of 2 minutes while brushing your teeth. Divide the
lower teeth set into 2 and the upper set into 2 as well then spend 30 seconds
on each division. You can engage yourself with something to wipe away time like
watching TV.
Some electric brushes come with timer and you can track how
you use it by syncing to your smartphone.
4. Avoid ‘Overdo’
Brushing too frequently, brushing teeth for more than 3
times daily is a bad idea. It can result in enamel wearing off. The enamel is
the white protective layer of the teeth. Too much brushing can also damage your
gum.
Be gentle and calm with brushing, don’t fight your teeth. Little
force is required to remove plaque or tartars present between teeth.
5. Wrong toothbrush storage
- Keep your tooth brush in a tidy place. Preferably, allow it to stand in a holder and don’t just keep it in bathroom or toilet. It gets exposed to germs if you keep it in toilet counter or sink.
- Do not keep brushes together to prevent them from touching one another and thus spreading germs.
- Keep your toothbrush dry. Bacteria grow easily on moist toothbrush. While traveling, use a toothbrush covers that permit air to reach the bristles.
6. Remember to change your toothbrush
What is your toothbrush age? Do not use your toothbrush for
more than 4 months because you like it or the made. Just get a new one. It is
recommended to change your tooth brush every 3 months. Broken bristle will not
do a better cleaning job.
You might have your toothbrush bristle breaking before
3months, kindly change It.
The type of toothpaste and mouthwashes you use matters a lot.
Use fluoride containing toothpaste for healthy and white teeth. White teeth
increase your smiling confidence.
8. Give it some time
After taking sour food or drink, give it some time before
brushing. Sour drinks include orange juice, apple and coffee. These sour drinks
and food contains acid that soften the enamel and brushing immediately after
eating them may cause the enamel to wear off.
Wait for about 30minutes before brushing your teeth after eating them.
