  • Potassium: 12% of the RDI.
  • Vitamin B6: 20% of the RDI.
  • Vitamin C: 17% of the RDI.
  • Magnesium: 8% of the RDI.
  • Copper: 5% of the RDI.
  • Manganese: 15% of the RDI.
  • Fiber: 3.1 grams.
Most of the carbs in ripe bananas are sugars — sucrose, glucose and fructose.

Green bananas (unripe) have higher starch and resistant starch than yellow bananas (ripe)

Resistant starches are long chains of glucose that can resist digestion. They are soluble fiber with lots of health benefits. This includes weight loss and reduced blood sugar level.

Resistant starch can also slow down the absorption of sugar from foods. This will help keep your blood sugar levels stable and feel full. They also increase fat burning.

Bananas Have a Low Glycemic Index, Which Depends on Ripeness

The glycemic index (GI) is the measure of quantity of food that will raise blood sugar levels. A food scores less than 55 is considered to have a low GI, while 56–69 is medium, and a score above 70 is high.

Foods with plenty simple sugars are easily absorbed, and have a high GI value because they cause a greater rise in blood sugar levels. Eating a lot of high-GI foods has been associated with weight gain and increase risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

However, bananas GI is between 42 and 62, depending on ripeness. This places them in low to medium on the glycemic index.

Ripe bananas have a higher GI than greener bananas. The sugar content increases as the banana ripens, which in return raises your blood sugar levels.

Do Banana Cause Weight Loss or Weight Gain

Unripe bananas contain resistant starch, which has been linked to weight loss and reduced blood sugar levels. There are no studies that examine the effects of bananas on weight directly, however, they do have several properties that would make us consider them a weight loss friendly food.

It helps prevent feelings of hunger and overeating, with no addition of unnecessary calories to your diet.

Are Banana Chips Weight Loss Friendly?

As bananas can be a healthy choice in a weight loss diet, banana chips are not considered. This is because bananas have been deeply fried in oil and doused in sugar. A half-cup serving of banana chips contains 210 calories and 12.5g fat. However, dehydrated banana slices are a better choice to consider as weight losing food.
